Ex-Rockstar Dev Suggests GTA 6 Won’t Be “Wildly Different” from GTA 5
Former Rockstar Games developer Obbe Vermeij recently offered his perspective on the much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, expressing a mix of optimism and caution. While Vermeij is confident that GTA 6 will ultimately be “the best game out there,” he also urged fans to manage their expectations, as the game may not be as radically different from its predecessor as some hope.
Though Vermeij left Rockstar Games in 2009 and has no direct involvement in GTA 6’s development, his 14-year tenure, which included key programming roles on GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA 4, gives him a unique perspective on the franchise.
In an interview with YouTuber SanInPlay, Vermeij clarified that he has “no inside information” about the new game but shared his reaction to the reveal trailer, which has already generated massive excitement. He was particularly impressed by a scene depicting a lively beach, where each character moved with distinct animations, showcasing Rockstar’s attention to detail. Despite this, he remains uncertain about how different GTA 6 will be from GTA 5.
“I don’t think it’s going to be wildly different from GTA 5. I think some people might be a little disappointed at first,” Vermeij commented, adding, “But it’s still going to be the best game out there.”
With sky-high expectations surrounding GTA 6, there is a chance that some fans might feel underwhelmed if the game doesn’t significantly innovate beyond its predecessor. Nevertheless, Vermeij praised the Miami-inspired setting, noting that it “suits GTA very well” and expressing excitement about the return to Vice City.
As of now, details about GTA 6 remain scarce, with only one trailer released so far. The game is expected to launch in Fall 2025 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with more reveals likely on the way.
