Modders Bring GTA 6’s Huge Map to Life in GTA 5
Marking the one-year anniversary of GTA 6’s reveal trailer, a YouTuber and a team of GTA 5 modders decided they’d waited long enough to explore the Florida-inspired state of Leonida. Using a fan-made map based on leaked references, trailer footage, and community estimations, they recreated a version of GTA 6’s map within GTA 5’s engine.
This recreation isn’t a complete representation of Leonida. Instead, it scales the community-created map to a 1:1 ratio, filling in areas seen in the trailer with custom assets. While far from definitive, the project gives fans a glimpse of Leonida’s potential size and scope.
YouTuber Dark Space shared a video showcasing the project, comparing travel times between GTA 5’s Los Santos and this theoretical GTA 6 map. It takes roughly three and a half minutes to cross Los Santos, while Leonida requires just over six minutes, suggesting GTA 6’s world could be significantly larger.
Although many parts of the map are placeholders, areas like Vice Beach and the Stockyard, featured prominently in the reveal trailer, have been fleshed out with assets and NPCs. Dark Space collaborated with the Ambitioneers, a modding group known for GTA 5 map expansions, to bring these locations to life. While simpler than what the official game will offer, these spaces offer a tantalizing preview of what exploring GTA 6’s streets might feel like.
The video also includes a short cutscene inspired by leaked story details, depicting Lucia and Jason pulling a safe out of a pawn shop with their car, a nod to the game’s rumored heist elements.
